Parti Kuomintang ditubuhkan hasil daripada gabungan kumpulan kongsi gelap [https</ins>:<ins style="font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">//ms.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tongmenghui Tongmenghui] dan Hung League yang merupakan gerakan pemberontakan bawah tanah untuk melawan maharaja China yang diketuai oleh Sun Yat Sen. Pada tahun 1911, Yuan Shi Kai yang merupakan seorang jeneral perang dan perdana menteri terakhir Dinasti Manchu telah mengambil alih revolusi daripada Sun Yat Sen. Tindakan ini telah menyebabkan sokongan rakyat juga terpecah dua sehingga menyebabkan berlakunya perang saudara yang besar. Sun Yat Sen terpaksa menyerah jawatan presiden kepada Yuan Shi Kai yang kemudiannya telah mengkhianati perjuangan Kuomintang. Lantikan Yuan Shi Kai ini turut diiktiraf oleh British sebagai pemerintah yang sah sehingga menyekat aktiviti Kuomintang. Pengkhianatan ramai ahli Kuomintang telah menyebabkan Sun Yat Sen menubuhkan parti baharu iaitu Parti Revolusi Cina (CRP) pada pada tahun 1914. Gerakan ini telah dipengaruhi oleh fahaman Komunis apabila Sun Yat Sen telah meminta bantuan Vladimir Lenin yang merupakan revolusioner yang berfahaman Komunis dan telah berjaya mengambil alih pemerintahan Rusia. Lenin telah menghantar Mikael Borodin sebagai penasihat kem tentera Kuomintang iaitu Akademi Ketenteraan Whampoa. Fahaman Komunis ini telah berjaya meresapi Kuomintang sehingga lahirnya Parti Komunis China.
